As we continue to survive in the midst of a pandemic, finding things to do with family members can be challenging. The little ones are logged on for school and play. There must be better options for a family to engage in real life.

What about gardening? Planning a garden as a family can be exciting. Especially when you think about simple foods that anyone can grow. National Seed Swap Day has traditionally been celebrated on the last Saturday in January. Many Seed Swaps were canceled due to social distancing. Some have been postponed for later this Spring. (Check your local listings.)

In District Heights, Maryland, I chose to share my excess seeds on National Seed Swap Day. I am determined to NOT allow this pandemic to steal my joy. I compiled a list, asked participants to pick what they desired, broke down seed packets to accommodate as many as possible, and provided contactless delivery. I was so emotionally full after the last delivery, I had to pull over and dry my eyes.

At a time when the world seems on edge, I could give from my heart. When the world seems so divisive, I could share a few seeds. At a time when we cannot hug, I could at least sow kindness into someone's dream garden. Random acts of kindness are something that is just a part of who I am. Not for public rewards or accolades, simply because that is how I was raised.

Steven Biggs recognizes the importance and joy of gardening. His parents sowed seeds of gardening which made an impression on Steven. As a father, garden writer, podcaster, and educator, Steven sees it as a way of life, and fun. One of his children, Emma, has also become enamored with the joy of gardening. I had a wonderful conversation with Steven and Emma in August of last year. On the heels of National Seed Swap Day, this was the perfect time to share their thoughts on gardening.
